UK module postage guide

How to Post an ECU or Control Module for UK Programming.

Prepare an ECU cloning, BSI programming, TCU data-transfer or airbag-module enquiry from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. This guide explains the information we need before a controller is removed, purchased or shipped.

When is postal module programming suitable?

A postal booking is useful when a removed controller can be assessed and programmed on the bench. It may suit compatible original-to-donor cloning, supported crash-data work or software recovery after a failed flash. The fault, module reference and available original data determine what is possible.

A warning light or fault code alone is not a reason to post an ECU. Power-supply faults, corrosion in vehicle connectors, damaged wiring, CAN-bus issues and mechanical faults need vehicle-side investigation. Our car diagnostics service and mobile service coverage information explain those alternatives.

Before buying a replacement

Send the original and donor module details first.

Photograph every label clearly, with the complete part number, manufacturer, hardware version and software identification readable. If you have a replacement unit, photograph it separately and identify which controller is original. Include the vehicle registration, VIN, engine code, year and transmission where known.

Explain the symptoms, diagnostic faults, water damage or previous programming attempts. An identical-looking casing or matching model name is not enough to establish donor compatibility. Please disclose whether either unit has been altered, remapped or used in another vehicle.

For supported cloning, readable vehicle-specific data may need to be transferred from the original. A non-communicating original requires assessment; it does not automatically mean recovery is possible or impossible. Wait for our response before buying a donor.

After your enquiry is approved

How to package and post an ECU safely.

Follow the instructions supplied for your controller. Removal must be carried out correctly for the vehicle; this guide is not a module-removal procedure. Do not open the casing, bend pins or attempt further software writes to a damaged unit while awaiting assessment.

01 · Approval

Confirm the booking

Wait for compatibility, the agreed work, quotation, return carriage and shipping instructions. Send only the approved units.

02 · Protection

Package the electronics

Use suitable antistatic protection, protect pins and plugs, and cushion each controller inside a rigid box. Keep units separate.

03 · Identification

Include booking details

Add your name, telephone, booking reference, registration, VIN and fault description. Clearly identify the original and donor.

04 · Tracking

Keep the shipment record

Choose tracked carriage suitable for the parcel’s value and destination. Keep the tracking details and your dispatch record.

What happens during bench programming and return?

The received modules and booking information are checked before work begins. Where original data can be read, it is backed up before supported transfer or programming. Available bench checks depend on the controller and the agreed service.

Bench verification cannot reproduce every operating condition in the vehicle. A compatible clone may be ready for refitting, while other jobs require coding, immobiliser synchronisation, transmission calibration or final fault checks at the vehicle. Confirm the expected fitting requirements before booking.

Turnaround and return carriage are quoted for the individual job. If a controller needs additional investigation, extra parts or vehicle-side work, the scope must be reviewed. Read the SGTM service terms before proceeding.

UK customers & independent garages

Postal coverage across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Approved postal enquiries are accepted from across the United Kingdom, including locations outside our usual West Midlands workshop and mobile area. Our workshop is at Unit 3 Glass Court, 70 Hayes Lane, Stourbridge, DY9 8QT. Obtain booking approval and the current shipping instructions before dispatch.

Postal availability depends on module suitability rather than travel distance. Republic of Ireland and other international enquiries have different carriage and customs considerations; see our international ECU services for that route. For equipped trade customers seeking software file delivery instead of sending hardware, see online ECU tuning files.

Workshop example

See BMW CAS3+ module programming by post.

Our BMW CAS3+ postal programming case study shows original and replacement modules prepared on the bench for data transfer. It illustrates the workflow for that job; it does not establish compatibility for another controller. Send your own module references for assessment.

Before shipping

UK postal ECU programming questions.

Can I post a module from anywhere in the UK?

Postal enquiries are accepted from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Send the vehicle details and module-label photographs first. We confirm compatibility, the quotation and shipping instructions before you send anything.

Do I need to send the original ECU and a replacement?

For cloning, both the original and compatible donor are usually needed. Some recovery or programming jobs differ. Ask us to check both labels and explain any previous work before buying or posting a replacement.

What if the original module does not communicate?

A communication fault does not confirm that stored data is lost. We assess the exact module and available access methods. Recovery cannot be guaranteed, and vehicle power, wiring or network checks may be needed first.

How should I package an ECU or control module?

Wait for approval, then protect electronics with suitable antistatic packaging, protect connectors and immobilise the unit with cushioning inside a rigid box. Keep separate modules from contacting each other and follow any additional instructions supplied for your unit.

What should I include in the parcel?

Include your name, contact details, booking reference, vehicle registration and VIN, the fault description and a list identifying the original and donor units. Do not send keys or extra components unless requested.

What is the turnaround and return postage cost?

The estimate and return carriage are quoted for the specific module, service and destination before booking. There is no single turnaround or shipping price that applies to every postal job.

Will a postal ECU clone be ready to fit?

A compatible data transfer may provide a replacement ready for refitting, but some vehicles still require coding, security synchronisation or calibration. The expected fitting requirements are confirmed for the individual module.

Can I use postal programming instead of vehicle diagnostics?

Postal bench work cannot test vehicle wiring, power supplies, CAN communication or mechanical faults. If these checks are needed, a workshop or suitable mobile diagnostic appointment may be required before module removal.

Ready for a compatibility check?

Send the VIN, fault details and both module labels.
